PLAIN SAILING FOR THE IT INFRASTRUCTURE AT RYA

The RYA is the national body for all forms of boating, including dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sports boats, powerboat racing, windsurfing, inland cruising and narrow boats, and personal watercraft.

One of Technique’s longest standing customers, the RYA first made contact more than 15 years ago with its IT infrastructure in a somewhat questionable state.

“There was no real structure to the IT set up at the time,” admits Andy Galvin, now IT Manager at the RYA. “We were running two ageing Novell servers, various different versions of Windows and Office software and there were a range of disparate databases in use. Everything was getting seriously outdated and our 100 or so staff had become accustomed to unscheduled periods of downtime as a result of everything being so unstable.”

It was clearly an unsustainable situation and Technique was called in to help put things right, starting with the installation of new servers and updated software and continuing as a key partner through the RYA’s move to new purpose built offices in Hamble, Hampshire, and a period of growth which now regularly sees up to 200 staff accessing the network. The IT set up today is a far cry from the days when cables were hanging out of windows just to achieve some level of network accessibility.

As well as being on hand to assist the RYA’s in-house IT team with switch configurations, network health checks, Citrix virtualisation projects and general best practice consultancy, Technique has also been called in to help with the smooth running of a series of sailing events hosted by the RYA.  As well as providing onsite setup and remote support for the Sailing World Cup and Youth Nationals, Technique also provided office support to the RYA during the London 2012 Olympics sailing competition.

“All of our events need to be backed up by a high level of IT connectivity, whether it’s providing secure WiFi access to our competitor accommodation block in Portland, or setting up firewalls and micro wave links to ensure the competitions run without disruption,” explained Andy.

“As you can imagine the pressure for everything to work absolutely perfectly when it comes to events as big as the Sailing World Cup is immense.  There’s also the additional IT requirements for the media, sponsors and corporate entertainment, so we are hugely grateful to have Technique engineers on hand to help deal with any problems.”

Special events aside, it’s the bigger picture IT infrastructure projects at the RYA where Technique’s expertise really comes to the fore.

“Day to day, our in house IT team do a superb job keeping the network and our individual users up and running without any major hitches. However, we know we can turn to Technique as and when required, both for more complex problem solving, as well as their recommendations on new software and hardware upgrades that enable us to grow our infrastructure in a logical and fully thought out way.”

After so long working together the Technique team has earned our complete trust. They have never let us down and this is the real basis for such a long standing and successful relationship
